History of the Branch

The Kraków Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in 1957 as the first regional branch of the Academy. Its creation responded to the need to integrate the scientific community of southern Poland while continuing the research traditions previously fostered by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. As one of Poland’s leading academic centres, Kraków was the natural location for the new branch, reflecting the city’s long-standing scholarly heritage and its central role in advancing scientific research.

    Headquarters and Location

    The Branch was initially headquartered in the building of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences at 17 Sławkowska Street. In 1993, it relocated to the 15th-century Kreczykowska Townhouse, located at 28 Św. Jana Street. Situated in the heart of Kraków’s historic centre, this listed historic building reflects the rich cultural and scholarly heritage of the city and underscores the close connection between the Kraków Branch and one of Poland’s foremost academic centres.
